St. Louis Rams: Showtime for Donnie Avery as knee rehab progresses
In a crowded mix at wide receiver, it looks like Donnie Avery will finally get a chance to impress new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Coming off right knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, Avery has missed most of the past two weeks with soreness. He returned to practice Wednesday and could make his preseason debut Saturday against the Tennessee Titans.
Avery hasn't played since his injury in the Rams' third preseason game of 2010.
He runs a true 4.3 and was clocked even lower during offseason training. If healthy, he could be a key element to a St. Louis offense that otherwise lacks deep speed in its receiving corps.
There's also a chance that Mike Sims-Walker will play against Tennessee, something that seemed doubtful after he injured his groin last week against the Indianapolis Colts.
Even though the Rams figure to spread the ball around, Sims-Walker could end up being the No. 1 target of QB Sam Bradford, with his size, and at least some down-field ability. But Sims-Walker, a free agent pickup from the Jacksonville Jaguars, needs all the work he can get to master the McDaniels scheme.
